Safe-OSE Workshop

Wednesday, August 12, 2026 (afternoon)
San Diego Supercomputer Center, UC San Diego
Room: TBD

Overview

This half-day workshop, organized in conjunction with SSDBM 2026 by the HDF5 SHINES project, an award of the U.S. National Science Foundation Safe-OSE Program, focuses on strengthening the safety, security, and privacy posture of the HDF5 open-source ecosystem. HDF5 is a foundational technology for scientific, engineering, government, and industrial data workflows; its role as a long-lived, self-describing data container makes trust in the HDF5 library, file format, extensions, tools, and supply chain increasingly important.

The workshop will bring together HDF5 developers, users, integrators, security practitioners, data managers, and researchers to examine current and emerging risks, discuss audit findings and mitigation priorities, and identify practical paths toward more secure-by-default HDF5 software and workflows. Topics include HDF5 security, safety, privacy, software supply chain risks, machine-readable file format specifications, and community priorities for future mitigation work. The workshop is intended for anyone who develops, deploys, packages, audits, or depends on HDF5 in scientific computing, high-performance computing, cloud, AI/ML, archival, regulated, or mission-critical environments.
